7 reasons your last pair of height lifts ended up in a drawer
Almost all of them are design faults, not your feet.
There is a very common story. Somebody buys height lifts, wears them properly for one day, and by the afternoon their heel is burning and their knees have opinions. The lifts go in a drawer, the conclusion is that lifts are not for them, and that conclusion is usually wrong — because what failed was a specific piece of moulded plastic, not the idea. Here are the seven reasons it goes that way, and which of them are fixable.
1. It was rigid

A hard wedge does not deform under your heel, so your weight lands on whatever small patch of it happens to be highest. After an hour you can feel exactly where that patch is, and by the end of the day it is the only thing you can feel. This is the single most common reason people give up, and it is purely a material choice.
Soft silicone spreads the load across the whole heel instead of concentrating it.
2. It moved

A wedge sitting loose on the footbed has nothing holding it. Every step nudges it forward, and within a few hours you are standing on its front edge rather than on the middle of it. This is what people mean when they say lifts changed how they walked, and it is also where most of the knee complaints come from.
A lift that grips your heel has nothing to slide against, because it is not in the shoe at all.
3. You started too high

Two inches sounds modest written down and is a great deal underfoot on day one. Most people buy the tallest option, because that is the point, and then discover their calves disagree. The height is not the problem; the jump is. There is also a practical reason to start low: your calves adapt to a raised heel over a week or two, and going straight to the tallest option means doing that adaptation and the novelty of the product at the same time, then blaming the product.
Start at the lowest height even if you intend to end up higher.
4. The shoe became too tight

Anything that raises your heel also pushes the top of your foot into the shoe. In a pair that already fitted snugly this turns into pressure across the instep within an hour, which gets blamed on the lift when it is really a fit problem. This is also the reason lifts work better in boots and lace-ups than in slip-ons — anything you can loosen across the instep gives the raised foot somewhere to go.
Use them in lace-ups with room to adjust, and go down a height in anything tight.
5. Your foot was sealed in

Solid rubber and closed-cell foam trap heat and moisture against the heel, which is uncomfortable in an hour and unpleasant by the evening. It is a small thing that pushes an otherwise tolerable product over the line into not being worn.
Perforations through the wall, and something you can rinse and dry overnight.
6. There was a step at the front edge

A wedge that stops abruptly leaves a ridge under the middle of your foot. Your arch finds it, presses on it all day, and it becomes the thing you notice. A wedge that thins out gradually to nothing gives your foot nothing to find.
Check that the taper runs out at the arch rather than ending in an edge.
7. You only tried them for five minutes

The opposite failure, and more common than it sounds. Tried on the carpet for two minutes, they feel strange, and they never get a real day. Everything about a raised heel feels odd for the first day or two and then stops being noticeable, so a two-minute test tells you nothing except that it is new. Give it three days rather than one if you can. The first day tells you whether it hurts; the third tells you whether you have stopped noticing it, and that second answer is the one that decides whether you keep wearing them.
One full day in real shoes is the only test worth running.
So is it worth trying again
Look at that list and notice how much of it is manufacturing rather than anatomy. Rigid instead of soft, loose instead of held, blunt instead of tapered, sealed instead of vented. Four of the seven are decisions somebody made in a factory, and you paid for them.
That is the whole case for trying again, and it is a narrow one.
